Maoist inmates take over Beur Jail in Patna

Patna(Bihar Times): More than two hundred Maoist inmates of high security Aadarsh Kara, Beur (Beur jail) took over a large part of the jail today. The Maoists attacked security guards on duty and ransacked a portion of the jail and even assaulted some inmates.

The Maoists have been staging a protest inside the jail premises and shouting slogans against the government. Interestingly, Maoist inmates have the support of hundreds of other inmates.

Maoist inmates have been protesting after the death of  40-year-old naxal Nagina Manjhi. Manjhi committed suicide by hanging at the beur central jail on Saturday. Manjhi (40), a resident of Gaya district, hung himself with a 'lungi' from the iron grill of his room in jail hospital. Maoist inmates accused the prison officials of failing to provide Manjhi prompt medical help.

According to jail officials, about 2,400 inmates are lodged in Beur jail, more than double the capacity of the jail. After Maoists look over a large part of the jail inside, police officials on duty inside fled fearing for their lives.

After news spread of Maoists capturing a large part of the jail, top police officials of the Patna district rushed to the scene. A large numbers of police personnel have been deployed outside the jail.

All jails in the state were put on high alert on Monday, a day after a Maoist jailbreak in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district.
