|           | Patna, (Bihar Times): Floods in Bihar has a unique
fall-out. The number of girls joining the flesh trade,
according to a survey done by an NGO, has shown an
    upward trend.Comment
On the pretext of providing jobs in theatres,
orchestra, beauty parlours, local dance groups,
circus, bars etc hundreds of such girls have been
pushed into flesh trade. These girls are lured by
false promises and have to face various forms of
    mental and physical exploitations.

Sonepur fair has always been known for the nautch
girls and theatres. This year many such young girls
have found their way into the Asia’s largest cattle
    fair.

Bhoomika Vihar, a Katihar-based NGO has made a rough
estimate of those missing girls. It is at present
running community safety net in more than 80 villages
of Katihar and Kishanganj districts. They found that most of the
cases of missing girls at these villages have not been
registered. Not only girls even male child trafficking
from the area is on the rise.

Earlier this year the Vihar has launched Beti Bachao
Andolan (Save Daughters Movement). The Kosi-Mahananda
region is often notorious for trafficking of girls and
this year their number has risen further. Because of
abject poverty many women are engaged in the
    cross-border smuggling too.

According to Arun Kumar of Bhoomika Vihar very few
cases have so far been reported about the number of
missing girls in the post-flood weeks. Only six cases
have been reported from Purnia, nine from Araria, 10
from Kishanganj and five from Katihar.
