|            | Patna, (Bihar Times): In an attempt to end the strike
by the third and fourth grade employees of the health
department the Bihar government has decided to put
health facility under the Essential Services
Maintenance Act (ESMA). The strike entered sixth day
  on Thursday.
It needs to be mentioned that health department
employees went on strike on Saturday following a
brutal thrashing by the police of the women health
workers in Patna last Friday when they were protesting
to press their charter of demands, which include the
    payment of salaries.

The strike crippled the health services in the state
leading to the death of about half a dozen patients.
The third and fourth grade health employees also
demanded the release of women colleagues arrested
after the protest demonstration on Friday.

Meanwhile, the health minister Chandra Mohan Rai said
that his department had already directed all district
magistrates and civil surgeons to take possible
measures to deal with the ongoing strike. Health has
already been included in the list of ESMA in most
  states in India.

Medical services in the Patna Medical College and
Hospital, Nalanda Medical College and Hospital and
Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital have also been
affected following the strike by nurses. The leaders of the protesting health workers said the strike would
continue until the arrested women employees are
      released.
