Three suspected thieves lynched in Bihar

Patna, Feb 17 : Three suspected thieves were lynched in Vaishali and Araria districts of Bihar Saturday.

A mob Saturday lynched a suspected thief in Shahadullapur village under Lalganj police station in Vaishali district. "He was beaten to death with bamboo sticks after being caught by a mob," a police official said Sunday.

The police have lodged a case of murder against four unidentified villagers.

In Araria district, two motorcycle snatchers were beaten to death by a mob. "A group of villagers chased and caught two motorcycle snatchers and beat them to death," the police official said.

In rural Bihar, `street justice' is common. Last year, over three dozen incidents of lynching were reported and many more may have gone unreported.

The worst lynching case was reported in September last year when ten men from the underprivileged Kueri community in Vaishali district were beaten to death for an alleged theft case. Later, a high-level probe conducted found that the men were not thieves as villagers earlier suspected.
