Maoists kidnap road engineer and supervisor

Patna, Feb 27: Suspected Maoist rebels in Bihar kidnapped an engineer and a supervisor of a private road construction company, the police said Wednesday.

Engineer Sanjay Singh and supervisor Dharmendra Singh of Ranchi-based Vijeta Construction Company were kidnapped by a group of armed Maoists in Rohtas district late Tuesday night.

According to police sources, the company received a ransom call from the abductors for safe release of the officials.

Vijeta Construction Company is engaged in the construction of Shivsagar-Chenari road in the district at an estimated cost of Rs.440 million.

The fear of Maoist militants has put a stop to road construction in many parts of rural Bihar. Contractors in several projects have fled, fearing for their lives, an official said.

Last year, Maoist guerrillas demanded Rs.220 million from the Hyderabad-based Engineering and Construction Inc (ECI), which was constructing roads in Rohtas.
