Patna (Bihar Times): The state government is planning to amend the Bihar Special Marriage Rules, 1955, under which the bride and groom will be issued separate marriage certificates.

According to reports the state government is considering a proposal from the Law and Registration department to amend the existing marriage rules to issue separate marriage certificates to both the bride and groom.

The amendment is likely to be made within the next couple of months. An official of the department is quoted by a news agency as to have said that “we all know what is happening in Punjab and Haryana, where cases of desertion of wives by NRI husbands is a social menace. In recent times, there have been cases of women marrying NRIs facing hardship after being deserted by husbands in foreign countries.”
Reports say that the amendment would give more legal rights to brides as in many cases husband denied the marriage leaving the wife to fend for herself.
However, legal experts are of the view that the state government’s move to protect legal rights of married women should be supplemented by enforcement of compulsory registration of marriages.
In Bihar very few marriages get registered.
