Patna, June 22 : Five more campuses of the famed Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) are to open in five states in a bid to provide scope for more Muslims to get into institutions of higher learning. Central Minister of State for Human Resource Development M.A.A. Fatmi Sunday said the campuses would come up in Bhopal, Pune, Katihar in Bihar, Mallapuram in Kerala and Murshidabad in West Bengal.
“This move will provide an easy opportunity for Muslims and others (to get) higher education,” Fatmi said here.

According to AMU spokesman Abrar Ahmed, while there is no reservation based on religion in AMU, located at Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, there is a 50 percent quota for the alumni's children, irrespective of their faith. Most students in the university are Muslims.

Comments... It's a good news that AMU is going to open its branches in different states. It's a trend today. Nearly all reputed universities of the world have been doing so for a decade, at least, and people have been benefiting from them. Opening new universities are good, but having new campuses of old and reputed universities are better on various counts. One more thing that I would like to suggest the concerned authorities is that the University should give affiliation to Secondary and Senior Secondary level schools also. This step will make this branching out of the University more fruitful. Anyway, it's a good start. If it happens it will definitely add a feather to the cap of Mr. Fatmi. drnasimakhtar@gmail.com ------------------------- There seems to be error either on the part of your reporter or on the part of the minister as there is no 50% reservation for alumni children. In fact 50% reservation is for the internal students of AMU, i.e, having passed the qualifying examination from the AMU.Dr M. Sajjad
