Patna, June 26 : The Patna High Court Thursday directed the state government to send jailed Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Mohammed Shahabuddin to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi for medical treatment. In his petition, the controversial parliamentarian drew the court's attention to the "lackadaisical attitude" of the Bihar government, saying the government did not permit him for his follow-up treatment at the AIIMS.
Shahabuddin was arrested in 2005 and spent nearly a month in the AIIMS in 2006 for a back surgery. He now needs follow-up medical treatment.

A division bench of Justices Shivkirti Singh and Jay Nandan Singh allowed the convicted MP to go for his treatment but also directed the government to ensure that trials in other cases pending against him are not affected.

A Lok Sabha member from Siwan since 1996, Shahabuddin is involved in over 40 criminal cases, including murder, abduction and possession of illegal arms.

Shahabuddin was convicted for the first time in March 2007, for his role in an attack on the Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist (CPI-ML) office in Siwan in 1998.

In May 2007, a special court sentenced him to life imprisonment for the kidnapping and murder of Chhote Lal Gupta, a CPI-ML worker, in 1999.

In August 2007, he was sentenced to 10 years in jail for attacking then Siwan Superintendent of Police S.K. Singhal in 1996.
