Bangla to be taught in Bihar schools following court order

Patna, (Bihar Times): Following the directive of the Patna High Court the Bihar government has recently decided to once again make arrangement for the teaching of Bangla in the schools. It would be taught right from Class-I to XII. The human resources development department has issued an order to appoint teachers of Bangla all over the state. About 7,000 teachers are likely to be appointed.

The court gave the directive in Purbo Bangla Sharnarthi Samiti (East Bangla Refugee Committee) Vs the State of Bihar case.

According to the order steps should be initiated immediately for appointment of Bangla teachers and publication of text books in this language.

The general secretary of the Samiti, Niranjan Saha, told a section of media that appointment of Bangla teachers had not been made since 1988. He said that there are only 50 Bangla teachers in the state when the population of Bengalis is over 17 lakh.

The panchayats have also been directed to initiate steps for appointment of Bangla teachers. It has also stressed the need to appoint Bangla teachers in secondary and high schools. The syllabus for Bangla language from Class I to Class XII has already been prepared and steps have been initiated for publication of text books.

Bengalis had been dominating Bihar socially, politically and economically for the last two centuries. But after the independence of the country a large number of Bengali population of Patna, Purena, Katihar, Bhagalpur etc migrated to other states. They were relatively better off and educated.

However, a fresh wave of Bengalis came to Bihar in 1950s. These were the refugees from the then East Pakistan, who settled in East Champaran, while some settled in the district adjoining West Bengal. It is these refugees who fought for the restoration of Bangla language in the state.

Many writers, politicians and men of letter, who rose to national fame in the past were Bihar-born. (IANS)
