Atrocities on Dalits, tribals on rise in Bihar

 

Patna, (Bihar Times): Bihar has witnessed a sharp rise in the cases of atrocities on Dalits and tribals in the last couple of years.

According to official figures available from the state headquarters in Patna altogether 3,091 cases of atrocities on scheduled castes and scheduled tribes are pending in Bihar till January 2008.

Of these 378 cases were reported from Muzaffapur district alone. Officials sources admitted to media that in 2007, there was rise in cases of atrocities on them as compared to previous years.

In all 1,932 cases of atrocities on scheduled castes and scheduled tribes were registered during 2007 against 1,729 in 2006. Of the cases registered during 2007, one related to murder, 11 to rape, eight arson, and 67 under the SC/ST Atrocities Prevention Act 1989 and others under the Indian Penal Code.
