Patna, (Bihar Times): A 24-member Prayag-Patliputra Rafting Expedition’08 reached Danapur cantonment on Monday. The team comprising different units of army covered about 600 km between Allahabad and Patna. Major General M M Kashid, ADG (Recruiting) flagged in the Expedition. It was flagged off from Allahabad on March 26 by Brigadier R K Bhutani.

The objective of the Expedition is to make the people aware of the pollution in Ganga and safeguard its fauna, especially endangered dolphins. Besides, the mission is to attract youths to the career in armed forces. The team urged the people to take measures for the conservation of endangered animals and fish.

This is the first time that the army jawans have taken up conservation of endangered animals through their expeditions. The decreasing number of dolphins has been a major concern for the ecologists and scientists as these animals are easily trapped in fishing nets and then killed by fisherman for oil. This practice is rampant in Ganga between Patna and Bhagalpur-Sahabganj.

The team comprise one officer, one junior commissioned officer and 22 personnel of other ranks from various units such as Bihar Regimental Centre, Central Ordnance Depot, Chheoki Ordnance Department, Bengal Engineering Group and Air Force Station, Bihta of Madhya Bharat Area and led by Major Swetabh.

The Expedition touched Sirsa, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Saidpur, Ghazipur, Buxar, Nainajor, Sinha (Bhojpur) and Dighwara (Saran).
