doctor couple quit job after repeated extortion threat

patna,(bihartimes): fed up by the repeated extortion threat from a criminal gang a doctor couple of motihari had last month resigned from the state government job and are now thinking in terms of leaving bihar for good.
thirty-seven year old physician, dr deepak kumar, who, along with his wife, dr seema sinha, gave up their jobs in new delhi five years back to return to bihar are now regretting their decision.

the tall claim of susashan (good governance) has seriously let them down. they have been forced to quit their government job out of fear and the indifferent attitude of the administration.

dr kumar has received at least three extortion calls since july 20, each demanding rs 10 lakh. the police traced the call to a criminal rajan sahni, who was arrested and jailed.

but in the meantime, the sahni gang on august 5 killed another man, ganesh singh. the gang had demanded extortion money from singh too. “on august 11, i got a call saying that if i did not pay up, i will meet the same fate,” dr kumar said.

the couple have been provided with a solitary security guard. but this did not instil much confidence in them. dr kumar appealed to the authorities that he be exempted from emergency duty during night hours.

however, his plea fell on the deaf ears. he said his application for an arms licence is pending in the office of the district magistrate of east champaran for over two years.

on august 21 the couple finally quit their government job. dr kumar has restricted the visit to his clinic. even his two sons, aged seven and five, have stopped going to school. he said he not only felt unsafe in motihari but in the whole of bihar.

he is now thinking in terms of leaving bihar. incidentally, his wife, seema, is a batchmate of lalu prasad’s eldest daughter misa bharati and hails from nalanda, the home district of chief minister nitish kumar.
only a few days back a delegation of bjp leaders, including motihari mla, pramod kumar, met the dgp, abhayanand, and demanded immediate crackdown on the criminal gangs active in east champaran. they were shocked by the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

but the doctor couple are not the only one leaving under fear of criminal gangs. patna businessmen rajkishore chaurasia got a letter on june 13 demanding extortion money of rs five lakh and received two threat calls on his phone. he had sent three applications to the local police but about three months later he is still running around to get an fir lodged.

media reports said that the police has refused to accept his fir on the pretext of carrying out preliminary investigations. the schools where his two sons study have asked him to keep his children at home.

he said the police actually teased him for going to the media, saying it would not help. his sons are living with their grandparents.
