patna,(bihartimes): the speaker uday narayan chaudhary on thursday rejected rjd’s no-confidence motion in the bihar assembly against the nitish kumar government as it lacked required strength of supporting members.
incidentally, the no trust motion was moved by rjd mla, durga prasad singh, when the leader of opposition, abdul bari siddiqui, was not present. he had gone to attend the last rites of elder brother of rjd supremo lalu prasad yadav, which was performed at digha ghat.
immediately after the question hour, singh and six other mlas submitted a no-confidence motion against the government to the speaker, who rejected it on the plea that only 17 members wanted to bring such a motion as against minimum requirement of 23 members. rjd has only 22 mlas in the house.
the congress, which has four mlas, ljp (1), cpi (1) and six independents did not support the no-confidence motion.
singh, however, defended the move to bring the no-confidence motion saying he did so to shake up the state government which was not discharging its constitutional duty properly.
earlier, chief minister nitish kumar, requested the speaker to accept it as it is the duty and responsibility of the main opposition to move no-confidence motion. he added that the speaker was the sole authority to decide on the matter as per rules.
water resources department minister vijay kumar chaudhary said the rjd has no knowledge of parliamentary norms and it tried to make a mockery of the rules by introducing the no-confidence motion without having the required strength.
