Uproarious scene in Bihar Legislature over lathicharge on teachers

Patna,(BiharTimes): Tuesday’s brutal lathicharge on the contractual teachers had its reverberations in the Bihar Legislature with the opposition parties forcing repeated adjournments of both the Houses on Wednesday.
Raising the issue during the Question Hour Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Abdul Bari Siddiqui, said he had given a notice for adjournment of the House on the incident of “police high-handedness” on agitating contractual teachers.

However, Speaker Uday Narayan Chaudhary rejected it stating that it was not in conformity with rules. Upon this the entire opposition trooped into well of the House and started shouting slogans against the government.
Congress Legislature party leader Sadanand Singh said that since use of force on agitating teachers was a sensitive issue, the Speaker should reconsider his decision and allow the notice of adjournment.

The minister in-charge for Home Vijay Kumar Chaudhary intervened to state that the government is ready to present an explanation, which was rejected by opposition members. He said the opposition should follow the rule of business which says that once a notice has been rejected by the Chair, it cannot be discussed in the House.

This was followed by verbal duel by the opposition and treasury benches. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was not present in the House.

The Speaker tried to defuse the situation, but to no avail. The House was then adjourned till 12 noon.
However, when the House reconvened, the din also retured. It was again adjourned till 2PM.

Meanwhile, Chaudhary accused the teachers of being violent and defended the police action as, according to him, it was taken in self-defense. There was a threat on the lives of the deputed policemen. Therefore, they had to resort to baton charges, tear gas and water cannons, the minister later told the Assembly.
