Para-teachers disrupt road, rail traffic on Bihar bandh day

Patna,(BiharTimes): Para-teachers throughout the state disrupted road and rail traffic during the bandh call given by them on Thursday. The call for shutdown was given in protest against the brutal police lathicharge on them near R-Block on Tuesday. More than 50 of them, several of them women, were injured in the incident.

After the baton charge the teachers turned violent and allegedly set ablaze half a dozen vehicles.  Meanwhile, in the state Assembly, the RJD-led opposition forced adjournment of both Houses of Bihar legislature to press its Adjournment Motion on the lathi-charge, which the presiding officers had rejected.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday suo motu sought an explanation from the state government on the brutal lathicharge, especially on women teachers by male policemen.

Though the government has rejected the demand, insisting that the para-teachers agreed to the service conditions at the time of their recruitment, the teachers union accused the state government of repeatedly changing the service conditions and compelling them to work as full-fledged teachers.

Now the teachers, are citing a Supreme Court ruling laying down “equal pay for equal work”.

Pradeep Kumar, leader of Bihar Rajya Shikshak Sangharsh Morcha, an umbrella body of contractual teachers, asked as to how can there be two sets of salary in the same school––ond drawing Rs 6,000-7,000 while others Rs 30,000 to 40,000.
